What Happens When the Always-On Display Freezes
Some Pixel users report that their phones suddenly become unresponsive while showing the Always-On Display (AOD). One owner described their device freezing on the AOD screen during a drive, leaving them with no option but to perform a force restart.
In a few instances, the phone begins responding again after several seconds. However, other users say the problem is more severe, with the device also freezing on the lock screen.
A Reddit discussion on the issue has already gathered more than 50 comments. One Pixel 10 Pro owner explained that their Always-On Display freezes and notifications remain visible over a completely black lock screen. Other users report facing several lock screen freezes each day, while some say the issue has become more frequent following recent updates.
The Problem Is Not Limited to the Pixel 10
Although the Pixel 10 lineup appears to be the most heavily affected, reports suggest the Pixel 9 series is experiencing similar issues. So far, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 models seem largely unaffected.
The situation is inconsistent, however. Some Pixel 9 owners claim their devices are working perfectly, while others continue to experience repeated AOD and lock screen freezes. Even among Pixel 10 Pro users, some report no problems at all, making it difficult to determine exactly what is triggering the bug.
Factory Reset Offers No Permanent Solution
Several users have tried troubleshooting on their own, including performing a factory reset or updating the Google Play System. Unfortunately, these methods have not consistently resolved the issue.
One Reddit user said rolling back to the February 2026 software update temporarily eliminated the freezes, but the problem returned after installing the March update again. This suggests the bug is likely tied to recent software changes rather than individual device settings.
The Only Reliable Workaround
At the moment, the only workaround that consistently prevents the freezing issue is disabling the Always-On Display entirely.
While turning off AOD means giving up convenient at-a-glance information like the time and notifications, many users report it significantly reduces or completely eliminates the need for repeated force restarts.
Google’s PixelCommunity account has reportedly contacted several affected users, indicating that the company is aware of the issue and is gathering feedback.
Google Needs a Long-Term Fix
The repeated appearance of lock screen and Always-On Display bugs after major Pixel software updates raises concerns about Google’s software quality assurance process. Frequent issues involving the display, connectivity, and app stability have left many Pixel owners frustrated.
Until Google releases an official software update to resolve the problem, affected users may find disabling the Always-On Display to be the most practical temporary solution. The situation will likely become clearer once Google rolls out a permanent fix.
